The Definition of Institutional Racism

The Definition of Institutional Racism The term institutional racism describes societal patterns and structures that impose oppressive or otherwise negative conditions on identifiable groups on the basis of race or ethnicity. Oppression may come from business, the government, the health care system, the schools, or the court, among other institutions.  This phenomenon may also be referred to as societal racism, institutionalized racism, or cultural racism. Institutional racism shouldnt be confused with individual racism, which is directed against one or a few individuals. It has the potential of negatively affecting people on a large scale, such as if a school refused to accept any African Americans on the basis of color.   The History of Institutional Racism   The term institutional racism  was coined at some point during the late 1960s  by Stokely Carmichael, who would  later become known as Kwame Ture.  Carmichael felt that it was important to distinguish personal bias, which has specific effects and can be identified and corrected relatively easily, with institutional bias, which is generally long-term and grounded more in inertia than in intent. Carmichael made this distinction because, like Martin Luther King Jr., he had grown tired of white moderates and uncommitted liberals who felt that the primary or sole purpose of the civil rights movement was white personal transformation. Carmichaels primary concern- and the primary concern of most civil rights leaders at the time- was societal transformation, a much more ambitious goal. Contemporary Relevance   Institutional racism in the United States  results from the social caste system that sustained- and was sustained by- slavery and racial segregation. Although the laws that enforced this caste system are no longer in place, its basic structure still stands to this day. This structure may gradually fall apart on its own over a period of generations, but activism is often  necessary to expedite the process and provide for a more equitable society in the interim. Examples of Institutional Racism   Opposing public school funding is not necessarily an act of individual racism. One can certainly oppose public school funding for valid, non-racist reasons. But to the extent that opposing public school funding has a disproportionate and detrimental effect on minority youth, it furthers the agenda of institutional racism.Many  other positions that are contrary to the civil rights agenda, such as  opposition to affirmative action, can also have the often unintended effect of sustaining institutional racism.Racial profiling occurs when any group is targeted for suspicion based on race, ethnic origin, or because they belong to another recognized protected class. The most well-known example of racial profiling involves law enforcement zeroing in on African-American males. Muslims have also been subjected to racial profiling after September 11, 2001, including anyone with a Middle Eastern appearance regardless of that individuals actual religious beliefs.   Looking to the Future   Various forms of activism have famously fought institutional racism over the years. Abolitionists and suffragettes are prime examples from the past. The Black Lives Matter movement was launched in the summer of 2013 after the 2012 death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin and the subsequent acquittal of his shooter, which many felt were based on race.

Investigating Electromagnets Essay When a current passed through a wire it causes the wire to have a magnetic field. If the wire is coiled it behaves like a bar magnet. The stronger the magnet the further the field lines reach. If you place an iron core in the coil of wire the magnet becomes stronger. Hypothesis: I think that if I pass current through a coil of wire, the coil of wire will become a magnet. I think this because the electrons are flowing through the wire and this causes the wire to become magnetic. I predict that if you increase the voltage, the magnets strength will increase and the magnetic field will get bigger, this is because Ohms law = V=IR, so if you increase the voltage, the current will increase. If the coil of wire has a resistance of 1 ohm and you pass volts through the wire, the wire will have a current of 6 amps. The second method that I predict which would affect the strength, is to place the coil around the nail. Also, if you increase the number of coils around the nail, this will also increase the strength of the magnet. The magnet can affect the randomly arranged domains by arranging the domains in line. The stronger the magnet, the more domains will be affected and put in line making the iron a magnet. I also predict that if I double the current the magnetic field will double. i. e. The strength of the magnet will be directly proportional to the current. Method: Equipment: Power pack, compass, wire (for coil), nail (iron), ammeter, 2 crocodile clips, ruler, extended wires. Diagram:   Set up the equipment as shown above. Make sure the equipment is set up correctly and there is the right amount of coils on the piece of copper. Also make sure everything is working.   Place the compass about a metre away from the coils.   Turn the power supply on and increase the voltage until the ammeter reads 0. 1 Amps. Move the compass towards the coil of wire. Use your finger to do this. When the compass moves or makes a sudden turn stop applying force to it. Then measure the distance between the coil of wire and the compass. Record the result and repeat this 3 times. After you have repeated this 3 times you change the current to 0. 2 Amps.   You then do the same process for what you did for 0. 1 Amps, this makes the test fair. Results table: Size of the field (mm) Test number Current (Amperes, A) Conclusion: My results support part of hypothesis. In my hypothesis I said that if I increase the current the magnetic field will increase, this is shown on my results table. The second part where my results support my hypothesis is that when a current passes through a coil of wire, it will become a magnet and when the current is stopped the coil of wire will become non-magnetic. Some parts of my results dont support my hypothesis, as I predicted that if I double the current the magnetic field would double. From my graph I can see at 0. 1 amps the field is 35, so if I were to double this I would get 70 but for 0. 2 amps I got 67. 33, so from this you can see that if I double the current the magnetic field does not double. The current is directly proportional to the magnetic field because it is a straight line. Evaluation: My results are reliable because I used the same equipment throughout the experiment. I also repeated my method 3 times, so I could get a fair average. I also made sure I kept the same number of coils of wire throughout the experiment. I also did the experiment in one day, therefore the room temperature was the same. These are the reasons why my test was a fair test; therefore the results I got were reliable. There was a problem when I did the test. The problem is, when the current and resistance get too high, the circuit gets hot and then trips out. This can affect the results because when the circuit gets too hot, and the resistance gets higher, the current or p. d. that is passing through, will be less than what it should be, therefore the magnetic field will be smaller than what it should be, because of this the results will be different. To solve this problem we might have to use thicker wire. We could also use shorter wire, Doing these would make the results more accurate. Another way we could solve the problem could be to let it cool down after it trips out. Another problem when doing this experiment is that the compass could be affected by the other groups magnetic field, this is because everyone was working at the same time. A way to solve this problem could be, to do the experiment at different times, like one after the other. Or you could do it in different rooms.

Comparative Style-book Essay Two well-know style books are The Elements of Style, by Strunk and White, and Style Toward Clarity and Grace, by Williams. Both of these books are very beneficial, discussing grammar rules, style, and composition, all with the aim to make its readers better writers. They teach readers to use proper techniques and proofread their papers so they can improve their writing style. Although the books goals are the same, each one approaches it in a different way, emphasizing certain points above others. While both books are well-written and taught me important rules, after analyzing both books, looking at their authors, target audience, cultural awareness, organization, and detail, I find Williams more helpful in developing my writing style and addressing the need of contemporary prose. A lot can be inferred about how the books were written by looking at their Authors. The authors of The Elements of Style, Strunk and White, were professor and student. When White was a student in 1919 his professor, Strunk, assigned him a coursepack, which would be the basis for their future book. The coursepack was very detailed and commanding, like White describes his professor when he calls him, â€Å"Sergeant Strunk snapping orders to his platoon† (xiv). Years later, after White had become a well-known, professional writer, he was commissioned to edit and improve the Strunk coursepack for publication. The book was published in 1959, and by that time White’s old professor had passed away. Now, White is also gone, and the book has been around for quite a while, making it slightly dated. I found Williams to be more modern, and connectable. It was last published by its author in 1990. Williams, a linguist, professor, and communication consultant, has meticulously studies the craft of writing, discovering what makes good writing good and bad writing bad. His careful observations and sensitivity to current issues that plague writing make his readers grasp many of the different aspects of writing. Since he is part of modern times, he is more culturally aware, giving him an advantage over Strunk and White. Since the books have been written in different times, the targeted audience is different.

Marketing Seminar Essay

â€Å"Marketing and Selling Technique Seminar†, a successful seminar that was held last Tuesday (July 10, 2012). The seminar brought much information, ideas, tips, as well as inspirational thoughts and experiences on us business management students shared by successful people in the field of marketing. The heartfelt invocation which started the program made the whole crowd in silence, and then it was being followed by our national anthem. The idea to exert a little effort to make the students alive to start the seminar was very much appreciated; the singing portion participated by talented ladies and the â€Å"pick-up lines† that were thrown by CMBT students made the crowd awake. I was happy when our department dean Marilou Pascual and the Vice Presidents of our campus started to share their inspirational messages, it was like we’re so privileged to hear words of wisdom coming from them. After the speech of our dean and of the vice presidents, an energetic dance number was performed by selected third year students, I guess many of us was entertained but somehow, somewhere I heard voices of my fellow students saying â€Å"ang inet naman!†, well I proved them right because I was also experiencing irritation because of the hot weather. Most of us students got excited because Sir. Arjhel Domingo the master of the ceremony just announced that before Mr. Simangan speak, we must first get our food!, so it’s â€Å"Merienda Time!† I’m just a bit disappointed about our drinks, it’s because it was warm! But at least the bread included was just fine. After the break time, Mr. Domingo finally introduced our resource speaker. I thought that Mr. Simangan will be just boring, but I was wrong because I enjoyed listening to him and with the use of the prepared presentation seen through the projector, I was able to understand more what Mr. Richard was saying. The resource speaker shared lots of things related to marketing as well as selling like strategies to win customers, marketing process, marketing mix, e-Marketing, brand generation and the blue and red ocean strategy, he also included some useful tips to boost sales and on how to properly negotiate with the customers and lastly he shared the top successful marketing techniques. When Mr. Simangan ended his lecture, lots of students asked marketing related questions to him with the help of Mr. Perlito Candari. Well, because Mr. Simangan is a marketing specialist or a marketing expert I should say, he answered and enlightened those students’ queries with ease. The next part of the program struck us students because of the testimonials of successful sales leaders who found happiness, fulfillment, and success in direct selling like Mrs. Thelma Guevarra Vergara the Senior Executive Unit Manager of Avon who became successful just because of her love in lipsticks. After the seminar was ended I realized that luck isn’t being gained instead it is being worked, and we should always stick in our mind that God has a plan for every one of us, it just depend on how we handle this plan that he gave. To sum it up, I enjoyed and I’m glad attending the seminar because I gained more knowledge and got the will and confidence to strive for the best.

Implemented Budget Plan Resulting In Increases In Debt And No Plan For Problems As we look at our Federal Governments role in execution and control of our nation’s budget and the current budget deficit we can only pray that those in charge of the decisions utilize the tools available to them to manage and soften the blow to the economy as the deficit grows.Where in the case our government employs a budget plan over several fiscal years and results wherein our economy sustains significant increases in the nation’s debt and displays no signs of relief nor presents no plans to deal with the problems, several outcomes would be likely in the economy. With respect to the aforementioned, problems arise when the general public loses confidence in the leadership and their ability to manage the economy to include job creation. The consequences result in falling incomes and rising unemployment due to reduction of output mirroring the shift in aggregate demand responding to lower sales and production. Decrease Taxes In Effort To Stimulate The Economy Another tool within our government and its fiscal policy to regulate and control economic growth is the taxation level. Some claim that, tax rate cuts can lead to increased economic growth, and wealth, while others claim that by reducing taxes correlates to the benefiting of the wealthy due to they pay the most taxes already.Our government possesses the powers to tax which in turn gives it greater control over its revenues. Mankiw, 2009, Ch. 34, P. 773 shares, that when our government reduces personal income taxes, it increases the take-home pay of consumers. These households will save some of this additional income, and will also spend some of it on goods and services. Because reducing taxes increases consumer spending thus stimulating the economy, the tax cut shifts the aggregate-demand curve to the right. Conversely, a tax increase represses consumer spending and shifts the aggregate-demand curve to the left.The greater question lies in ‘what is the impact in our economy of a tax reduction for those making over $250,000’? Amadeo, 2013 shares that, the government considers those families that earn more than $250,000 yearly are wealthy and therefore should pay more taxes due to their ability to afford it. Amadeo, 2013 continues by stating that, economist say they do not spend these tax cuts, but save and invest them and therefore tax cuts for the wealth do not stimulate the economy. Investment Level’s Decrease Due To Lack Of Confidence In EconomyThe economy revolves around the ability of consumers to invest their moneys in goods and services or deposit ones excess money into interest bearing savings accounts wherein which the financial institutions would use the funds to make loans to consumers for the purpose of investing in personal interests. The ability to invest is crucial to the long-run of our economy’s succe ss and the functions of aggregate demand and supply and when these levels of investment decrease due to a lack of confidence in the economy several consequences begin to unfold in the economy. Mankiw, 2009, Ch. 33, P. 41 shares that, during such an event many people lose confidence in the future and alter their plans, therefore households cut back on their spending and refrain from major purchases, and businesses retract from the purchases of new equipment. AmosWeb, 2013 states; â€Å"the confidence that consumers have in the economy affects their willingness to undertake consumption expenditures†. Any change in the confidence of consumers wherein by changing consumption expenditures, will induce changes in the economy’s aggregate demand therefore causing a leftward shift of the demand curve. Interest Rates Kept Artificially Low By Fed’s For Several YearsThe economy revolves around the interest rates on the many investments of the consumers and plays a crucial p art in the spending on goods and services. The impact on the economy can be said to be two fold in the event that interest rates are kept artificially low by the Federal Reserve over a lengthy period of time. Mankiw, 2009, Ch. 33, P. 728 states that, interest rates affect spending on goods and services, therefore a lower interest rate makes borrowing less expensive and it encourages businesses to borrow to invest in operations and equipment as well as it encourages consumers to borrow to invest in self and home.This said, lower interest rates increase the quantity of goods and services in the economy. Conversely, Shilling, 2012 shares that artificially lower interest rates can have negative impacts on consumers in where those who are saving money are now receiving minimal to little return on their bank and money market accounts. Modular schools will be portable, easily moved from one location to another as the general population shifts geographically. Students will be micro-chipped to facilitate supervision and safety. Classes will be conducted with robots providing instruction. Traditional schools will cease to exist. Students will complete individual studies on computers at community centers open 24/7, working when it’s most convenient for them and communicating with teachers by voice mail. All field trips will be virtual, and students will attend virtual workshops conducted by recognized authorities in various fields. A couple of them are more reminiscent of Brave New World. What then will be the teacher’s role in the future? Except for answering voice mail now and then, it’s projected to be of little importance, no more than writing study programs to be delivered via students’ computers, the kinds of instructional programs that computers could probably generate for other computers to run. The human factor seems to be missing altogether, and that’s more than scary. It would be a disaster of untold consequence if eliminating the teacher-student relationship should turn out to be something other than science fiction. The fact is, however, that the expanded use of technology has already decreased the amount of time students spend interacting with their teachers and with one another. Many kids now earn high school diplomas without ever spending time with other human beings in a classroom; offering on line classes is an established practice at colleges and universities. Looking ahead from projected models of instruction and from current trends in how high school and college credits are being earned, it isn’t impossible to imagine teachers eventually being phased out of the process entirely, with lessons designed and delivered by curriculum centers. The personal interaction between teachers and their students could become as outmoded as kids writing on slates with chalk. What a tragic loss that would be, a deprivation that couldn’t be ameliorated through the most advanced uses of technology because it relates directly to the human spirit. Eliminating classroom teachers in favor of computer instruction would surely save billions of dollars, but to believe that their absence would not impact students is to deny human nature. How do you program a computer to jump-start a kid’s curiosity or instill a love of learning or make students believe they can when they’re convinced they can’t? How do you write computer programs that show students every day that they are important? A computer never smiles or hands out Kleenex during flu season or lends lunch money or carries on a spontaneous discussion that starts nowhere and ends up in an unexpected, spectacular place, nor does a computer model how we should treat each other. Computer programs can instruct, but they can’t teach. Carl Jung, who spent a lifetime studying the human psyche long before the advent of computers, knew the difference between instructing and teaching. â€Å"The curriculum is so much necessary raw material,† he said, â€Å"but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.† Read Jung’s entire quotation and other observations about the vital importance of the teacher-student relationship here. Looking over the predictions about schools of the future, it occurs to me that the seers forgot to consider an important variable: parents. Parents might not embrace the idea that their children should report to community centers and be instructed by a computer that doesn’t know the color of their eyes or what they want to be when they grow up or that they are sad because their grandmother died. It’s hard to imagine that parents wouldn’t want their children to be valued and nurtured, as well as instructed. It’s also hard to imagine the stands filling up on Friday night so that parents can watch a virtual football game on their laptops. A silly notion, but I offer it to make the point that our schools are so thoroughly woven into the fabric of our communities that to eliminate them would destroy a big chunk of what holds us together. Schools of the future won’t become a dystopian vision realized, so long as everyone understands and remembers some essential truths: A school is more than a building, education is more than instruction, and since kids are human beings, educating them requires a human touch. How to Set up a Reading Schedule Pick a list of books youd like to read.Determine when you will start reading your first book.Select the order in which youd like to read the books on your reading list.Decide how many pages you will read every day. If youve decided that youll read 5 pages per day, count the number of pages in the book that youve selected to read first.Write the page span (1-5) down on paper next to your selected start date. Its also a great idea to write your schedule up on the calendar, so you can track your reading progress by crossing off the date when youve finished your reading for that day.Continue through the book, tracking where each stopping point will be. You may decide to mark the stopping points in your book with a post-it or pencil mark, so the reading will seem more manageable.As you page through the book, you may decide to alter your reading schedule (add or subtract pages for a particular day), so youll stop and/or start on a new chapter or section of the book.Once youve determined th e schedule for the first book, you can move on to the next book on your reading list.
